Requirements
This course is suitable for a range of students, including current and future employees in the grooming industry. This is an undergraduate Certificate course. You must have a level 5 certificate (Leaving Certificate) or equivalent and/or relevant work experience. Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) or experience in industry may also be considered for entry.
Course Overview:
This new and exciting course has been built with insights from practitioners in the grooming industry to help student develop a greater understanding of the skin and hair health, which should empower them in their current or future practice.
Students will learn about normal skin and hair follicle health, the factors that contribute to that health, as well as discussing the diversity of skin and hair across diverse populations.
As this course is originated and delivered by Prof. Des Tobin, director of the UCD Charles Institute of Dermatology, reference will be made during this course on the latest research on skin and hair follicle disease (especially alopecia), aging, and management. The course will also discuss the state of (nutri)cosmetic approaches though the lends of the evidence to inform best practice.

Learning Outcomes:
On completion of this Certificate, learners will be able to:

- Understand common abnormalities affecting skin and scalp hair.
- Understand the regenerative/wound-healing capacity of skin and hair follicles.
- Know the pathways for referral to medical professionals for skin and scalp hair conditions.
- Know how the hair fiber is formed and its structure etc.
- Know how skin cells are formed and the impact of age, gender and geographic ancestry.
- Understand the impact of chemical exposure (including product interface with skin and hair).
- Understand the impact of diet, wellbeing and environmental factors on the skin and hair.
- Understand the psychosocial impact of skin and hair-associated issues.
